Your car paint is looking faded? Or are you simply looking for a change of color? Painting your own car could save you thousands of bucks. Being systematic and good preparation will make your old rattletrap looking like a new one in no time. Do not know how to go about it? Our experts at Fuccillo Mitsubishi have listed down DIY tips for you to paint your own car.
What You Will Need
Painting can be done outside using certain precautions; however, it is better to use a shed to avoid mixing elements. Ample amount of 1200- and 2000- grit wet-and-dry sandpaper, masking tape, an air compressor, paint thinners, safety glasses, enamel paint, newspaper for masking off, spray gun, buffer, clear-coat lacquer, electric or air-powdered sander, a top coat and un undercoat. To keep the area clean, a dust extractor can come handy.
Prep the Painting Surface
Thoroughly wash and remove any rust if you want to paint your car's exterior. However, if you plan on painting the interior, wash all the cloth upholstery with a wet cloth and vacuum. Use 1200- grit wet sandpaper to prevent dust and dirt mixing and giving the surface an uneven finish. Use clear adhesion promoter to ensure proper adhesion when painting metal or hard plastics.
Use Quality Paint
It is integral that your paint should not be of poor quality. Paint will deteriorate if you use a paint of low quality regardless how well you painted the car in the first place. There are a number of companies offering high quality primers and paints that won't chip, flake, peel or crack and work flawlessly on vinyl, leather, and plastic, giving your paint job a professional look.
Do not try to paint the whole surface in the first coating; apply light, even coats. Do not lay a thick coat, cover the whole area though. Primer will show through the paint on the first coat- it is standard. Read the instructions on the can label on how long to wait between coats. Do not start painting a new coat unless the first one dries. Keep coating until you get the desired results.
