Mitsubishi Lancer

For some, regular maintenance may appear to be a nuisance and/or time-consuming. But if you are very familiar and experienced with checking fluids, doing oil changes, and the like, it probably comes as second nature to you. Some car enthusiasts really enjoy checking off their auto-care ‘To Do List’ as the years go by, and take great pride in it.

If you’re not one of those, you can just take your baby to an auto shop when the maintenance documents tell you it’s time for your Lancer to get its checkup.  Once you’ve established a good rapport with the dealer and/or mechanic, they can let you know when it’s time to check on and/or replace something.

If you’re someone who drives their vehicle hard and can include severe driving conditions in your driving scope, you might want to be extra careful with your maintenance and mechanic visits. Severe driving conditions can include driving on all kinds of rough and rough-ish ground surfaces: uneven, bumpy, sandy, muddy, salty; even using brakes excessively and spending half or your operating time in stop and go traffic. Driving frequently in very hot weather, driving at low a speed constantly and having the car excessively idle, are all conditions that can be detrimental to the engine.

The Basic milestones are:

5,000 miles, or roughly every 5 months, have the disc brake pads and rotors inspected; inspect suspension system, inspect driveshaft boots, and rotate tires. Under severe driving conditions, it is a good idea to get all of these done on a 4- month timetable.

15,000 miles, or roughly every 15 months, check the fluid level of the reserved tank for the active center differential, check condition of brake hoses, inspect ball joint and steering linkage seals, replace air purifier filter, and replace air cleaner element. Again, for severe car usage, you might want to shorten the length of time between inspections. For the air purifier filter, check it for any sign of clogging. You may be able to do some of these yourself, as some are simple visual inspections, have your mechanic point out how.

30,000 miles, or roughly every 30 months, check the level of the manual transaxle oil and change the manual transaxle oil; check the level of the transfer oil and change the transfer oil; change the engine coolant; change the rear axle oil; check the entire fuel system for leaks, check the condition of the fuel hoses; replace generator/water pump/power steering pump drive belts. This is the time to check and service the entire exhaust system (30,000 miles or 32 months, whichever comes first). For severe car usage, shorten the time frame for the transaxle oil to about 16 months.

At 60,000 miles, or roughly every 60 months, have the radiator and heater hoses inspected as well as replaced where necessary. Check for any leakage and clogging in the evaporative emission control system, check and replace spark plugs and get the timing belt replaced. For severe car usage, make doubly sure these are done on schedule, every 60,000 miles or 64 months, whichever comes first.

Beyond those first 5 years:

100,000 MILES
RECOMMENDED SERVICES:
Engine oil (Change)
Oil filter (Replace)
Wheels & tires (Rotate)
RECOMMENDED INSPECTIONS:

Mitsubishi Mirage

Maintaining Your Mitstubishi Mirage

To take the best care of your new vehicle, Mitsubishi recommends having your Mirage serviced by the factory-trained technicians at an authorized Mitsubishi dealership – most likely the place you purchased it. To enjoy your Mitsubishi for year to come, it's best to consult your authorized Mitsubishi dealership when you have questions, check and understand the warranty and the maintenance manual regarding the appropriate maintenance schedule for your vehicle.

Following the correct maintenance schedule is an essential ingredient in keeping your vehicle in the best condition possible. Proper maintenance helps to prevent vehicle problems before they occur, giving you peace of mind every time you drive.

It is the owner’s responsibility to maintain their vehicle in accordance with the maintenance schedules shown in the vehicle’s warranty and maintenance manual. It’s very important to be cognizant of the maintenance schedule as warranty coverage may be denied if the proper maintenance schedule is not followed!

Not only does your vehicle’s performance depend on proper maintenance, but also the continued proper functioning of the emissions control system. Mitsubishi recommends you bring your Mirage to the dealership every 60,000 miles for a tune up. Another benefit of having your vehicle maintained at an authorized Mitsubishi dealer is that it quickly and easily provides a record of your maintenance should your ever require a warranty repair.

Certain parts of the engine require inspection or replacement at regular intervals. Items like spark plugs, the air and fuel filters, ignition cables, and other emissions-related components should be inspected and replaced as needed to keep the engine running properly. The process of making sure each of these items is in good working condition is called a tune up. (See below).

For example, your car’s air filter keeps impurities from damaging the inside of your engine. Not only will replacing a dirty air filter save gas, it will protect your engine. Replacing a clogged air filter can improve your car’s gas mileage by as much as 10 percent.

Another maintenance task that can improve your gas mileage by 1-2 percent is by making sure you are using the manufacturer’s recommended grade of motor oil. Did you know that using 10W-30 motor oil in an engine designed to use 5W-30 can lower your gas mileage by 1-2 %; using 5W-30 for a recommended 5W-20 can lower your gas mileage by 1-1.5 %? Also, look for blends that are labeled “energy conserving” on the API performance symbol, these blends contain friction-reducing additives.

Fixing a car that is noticeably out of tune or has failed an emissions test can improve its gas mileage by an average of 4 percent, though results vary based on the kind of repair and how well it is done. Fixing a serious maintenance problem, such as a faulty oxygen sensor, can improve your mileage by as much as 40 percent!

The following are typical items that should be maintained in order to insure correct performance of your Mirage (for additional details, refer to your “Warranty and Maintenance Manual”). Standard equipment that should be checked during a tune-up:

  • Cooling system (including coolant hoses)
  • Drive belts
  • Emission system
  • Exhaust system
  • Filters: Air, Fuel, Oil
  • Fuel hoses
  • Fuel system
  • Intake and exhaust valve clearance
  • Spark plugs
  • Timing belt
  • Automatic transmission fluid
  • Manual transmission / transaxle oil
  • Clutch fluid
  • Propeller shaft
  • Rear Axle oil
  • Suspension
  • Ball joint and Steering linkage
  • Brake fluid
  • Brake hoses
  • Brake pads
  • Air conditioning
  • Battery
  • Tires

The Benefits of a Tune Up

The engine works best when each of its individual parts works correctly. Having your vehicle tuned up at regular intervals helps maximize engine performance and efficiency. After a tune up you may notice improved acceleration and fuel economy along with the smoother ride.

It always feels great when picking up your Mirage after a tune up, the engine feels spritely, smooth, no rough idle, it just has a tighter overall feel. And you have the peace of mind knowing you’re taking care of your investment and that there are no problems lurking under the hood.

 Lancer EVO

The Evolution – or more affectionately called the "Evo" - is based on the Lancer compact sedan. The two cars don't have much in common beyond their body and interior design, the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution was originally developed in the early 1990s to compete in the World Rally Championship racing series and abide by officially recognized model rules. However, whereas the regular Lancer is a rather mundane economy car - despite its sharp styling - the pumped-up, flared-up Evo is turbocharged, boisterous and ready to lay down some serious tracks on a racetrack.

With the powerful turbocharged engine and all-wheel drive, the Lancer Evolution quickly became a successful rally car. Despite its humble beginnings as an average economy car, the Evo can match all but the fastest production cars on the market in terms of acceleration and cornering skills.

Originally, the early road-going versions of the Evo were meant just for the Japanese home market. This targeted marketing didn't stop the car from developing a cult-like following around the world. For the 2003 model year, Mitsubishi started importing official road-going Lancer Evolutions to the North American market.

If you’re looking for a well-kept used Evo, you may be in for a long search but it will be worth the effort.  Clearly, buyers searching for a used Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution should wait for one that's been well cared for. The thing is, no one buys an Evo to drive it like the ‘little old lady from Pasadena’, but some owners are more fastidious than others.  For example, taking care about the engine break-in period (particularly important for this car), regular oil changes, maintenance and service are key. Once you find a well-maintained Evo with extensive records, you can start to enjoy the fun of the well developed power train and eager performance.

If you take care of your Evo, it will take care of you and you’ll have many years of road enjoyment. Evo owners tend to have a very strong relationships with their cars, even though they may drive harder, they are more conscientious maintainers.  That’s all about adhering to the car maintenance schedule, which involves checking (and potentially replacing) the inner working of your ride.

For some, this may appear to be a nuisance or time-consuming. But if you are very familiar and experienced with checking fluids, doing oil changes, and the like it is probably a second nature. If you’re not, you can just take your baby to an auto shop when the maintenance documents tell you it’s time for your Evo to get its check up.  Once you’ve established a good rapport with the dealer and/or mechanic, they can let you know when it’s time to check on and/or replace something.

If you’re someone who drives their vehicle hard and can include severe driving conditions, you might want to be extra careful with your maintenance and mechanic visits. Severe driving conditions can include driving on all kinds of rough and rough-ish ground surfaces: uneven, bumpy, sandy, muddy, salty; even using brakes excessively and half or your operating time is stop and go traffic, very hot weather driving, driving at a low speed constantly and having the car excessively idle, all conditions which can be detrimental to the engine.

Mitsubishi Mirage

Most people who are in the Mirage market are those who are still looking for the basic car that will get you from here to there WIth the Mirage, you can now get include 14-inch steel wheels, a rear spoiler, keyless entry, full power accessories, automatic climate control, a tilt-only steering wheel, 60/40-split-folding rear seats and a four-speaker sound system with a CD player and USB and auxiliary audio inputs as standard equipment! (DE trim).

The 2015 Mitsubishi Mirage is a small, four-door, five-passenger hatchback offered in two trim levels: DE and ES. Standard features for the base Alloy wheels are a stand-alone option on the DE.

The only thing people seem to know about this car is that it’s super cute, totally affordable with outstanding MPG's. The other thing one notices, is the very poor professional reviews but extremely positive consumer reviews. A conundrum. Digging into the consumer reviews we see statements from true aficionados like:

“Everything that the professional reviewers say with the exception that it does feel "slightly" top heavy in highway speed turns as totally false.”

“This car is a blast! Did 70-75 mph all the way home, hardly touching the pedal and got 47.6 average mpg! It feels like a much bigger car and is way bigger than you think inside.”

“I love this car, I feel it is very well built a blast to drive and with the gas mileage, it's almost like driving for free! Mine is an ES model with CVT.”

Reviews are usually places where consumers unload their disappointments, not so for the Mirage! Most of the reviews contradict what expert reviewers have said!

Mirage shoppers want a vehicle that lets them enjoy life on a budget, yet be comfortable and meet all their driving needs. Saving lots of money every time you travel, whether zipping to town or on a trip is a primary goal.  Thanks to a small turning circle and light-effort steering, the 2015 Mitsubishi Mirage is easy to maneuver in dense urban settings.  Low speed driving in cramped spaces is a joy!

The upper end ES model prices can get a bit higher and if you’re really looking for keeping your cash outlay or monthly as bare bones as possible, you could question yourself whether the extra cost on those models makes sense to you. They have all the basic same mechanics as the DE model with standard power windows locks and mirrors.  If you’re looking for a serious bargain, get yourself the DE Mirage.

The average transaction amount for a new car nowadays is somewhere north of $30,000, so if a person is spending less than half of that they can expect to leave a few things "on the table". This is not a fault with the car, but rather just personal choice.  If you want to have a $500 a month car payment, you can certainly do that with hundreds of options out there.

Most owners bragged of gas mileage way in excess of 40 MPG (the EPA-estimated amount) getting upwards of 48 MPG. Very impressive for a non-hybrid vehicle these days.

In the interior, all the essential controls are easily accessible and simple to use. Taller folks should find enough head-and legroom. The comfort level of the seats seem better on the ES model, as they are slightly softer with premium materials, and the drivers seat also adjusts up and down to conform to the drivers height. The interior is exceptionally roomy and close to that of many midsize cars of today.

Standard safety features for the 2015 Mitsubishi Mirage include four-wheel antilock brakes (front discs, rear drums), front-seat side airbags, side curtain airbags, a driver knee airbag, and traction and stability control. Front and rear parking sensors are optional on both trim levels, while a rearview camera is optional only on the ES.
